I got caught eavesdropping on a conversation last week at an event in NYC.
One of the guys was bragging about how he'd found a dirt-cheap marketing agency to handle “all of his marketing”.
This dude was stoked. As if he just figured out the hack of all hacks.
I couldn't help but lean over to hear his rationale on why this was such a good idea…
And I spilled my water on the fuckin guy. I was so embarrassed.
Usually, I’m pretty smooth tbh.
But I told the dude.
“I've been down that road before. It's not pretty…
A few years back, I decided to outsource some content creation. I found a freelancer offering rates that seemed too good to be true.
Spoiler alert: They were.
The content was ass. I spent hours critiquing and rewriting. In the end, I paid twice - once for the cheap work, and again for someone competent to fix it.
It's the classic trap of: "Buy cheap, Buy twice."
This isn’t just for marketing either.
Here's the thing about choosing the cheap option:
They often lack experience
They may use outdated tactics
They're not professionals
Quality suffers as they cut corners
So not only do you waste time, but more money in the long run, and who knows what opportunities.
The answer isn’t just about not being cheap to avoid bad hires. It's about the value of investing in quality.
When you hire top talent or a reputable agency:
You get better results, faster
They bring valuable insights and strategies
They save you time and headaches
Your business grows more quickly
Yes, it costs more upfront. But the return is usually exponentially higher.
Think about it this way:
Which would you rather…
A) Pay $1000 for work that generates $2000 in revenue?
B) Pay $3000 for work that generates $10000 in revenue?
Option B “costs” more, but the net gain is much higher.
I've learned this lesson the hard way, not just with hiring, but in many areas of business.
Cheap software, low-cost materials that need constant replacement, on and on.
In each case, the "savings" end up costing more in the long run.
So next time you're tempted by a bargain-basement offer, pause.
Ask yourself: What's the real cost of this choice?
Remember what your dad always told you, “you often get what you pay for.”
