The biggest lesson I learned when I was scaling my agency:
Hiring is a waste of time.
(for the CEO to do)
And it’s f*ckin hard.
That shit takes so much time.
This weekend I was chilling with the fam by the pool and I got to thinking:
“How much time have I spent hiring people, and what is the value of that time?”
So I did the math…
Over the years I’ve hired over 100 people…
On average each hire takes 30 hours of work…
Writing the job description…
Distribute it
Asking the network for referrals
Review 200-300 resumes/role
Share and review pilot projects
Schedule first-round interviews
Have first-round interviews
Schedule second-round interviews
Have second-round interviews
Make an offer
Negotiate offer
Message candidates that didn’t make it…
Onboard the new hire.
This whole process would take 30+ hours per role spread across 40-60 days.
A shit ton of work.
We think, “I’ll just post a job and voila!”, except there’s a lot more that goes into it that you don’t see.
The cost of that time is even crazier.
Let’s say I was making $350k per year in profit.
That’s about $29,000 per month…
Assuming I work 40 hours per week…
My hourly rate is $182.
Multiply that by 30 hours…
It cost me $5,468.75 per role that I’d hire.
30 hours and $5,468.75!
For an unproven person.
If I hire 4 people per year (it was often more than that), it would cost me $20k+.
My time could have been spent on things that were much more valuable, like…
Work with the sales team…
Running ads
Posting content
Writing emails
Coaching the team
Reducing churn
On and on.
I’m getting heated just thinking about all the time and money I wasted hiring myself.
I realized real CEOs never run the recruiting process.
That’s what all the big dogs do.
They hire someone to do the time-sucking part of it… all the interviews and shit.
And they swoop in for final interviews and make the final decision.
Spending 3 hours instead of 30.
Focusing on the business while they pay someone a few thousand to handle the recruiting for them.
